The image commonly associated with holidays in the sun is one of a palm-fringed beach. And whilst Lanzarote is short on trees, it can boast plenty of palms. From coconut palms lining the beach at Playa Flamingo to the Valley of a Thousand Palms, the palm tree is something of an emblem for the island.

Unlike the other Canary Islands, Lanzarote is usually described as arid and bare. This is very much the result of the volcanic eruptions that devastated the island from 1730-36, as they occurred in the most verdant area and left a wasteland of lava in their wake. Now the aftermath of this disastrous event has been turned into a tourist attraction, called the Timanfaya National Park.

It is the most popular of all Lanzarote’s centres of art and culture and attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. In each of the main tourist resorts, the stark scenery is softened by copious planting, as the spring like year round climate allows many sub-tropical species to thrive.

A large range of palms can now be seen in the gardens of Lanzarote Hotels such as the Fariones Hotel in Puerto del Carmen. Whilst many of the villas in Lanzarote are also generously endowed with hibiscus, bougainvillea and other bright splashes of flora. The strong colours of such flowers contrast well with the whitewashed walls and black volcanic stone that are used to construct houses on the island. And the clear sunlight that Lanzarote enjoys shows these off to their best advantage.

In the northern half of the island there is noticeably more greenery, especially in early spring. Whilst not inundated with rain, there is considerably more moisture hanging in the air around the Peñas del Chache, allowing wild flowers, such as poppies, daisies and lavender to thrive. And it is in the north that the palm filled valley of Haria can be found.

It is a favourite spot with holidaymakers who have hired a car to roam around Lanzarote. The valley is reputed to have a thousand trees, one planted for every girl and two for every boy born in the municipality. Car hire in Lanzarote opens up the whole of the island’s varied scenery to visitors and often captivates them with its rugged and mountainous contours. The small size of the island means that visitors can take in most of the sites with ease within a seven day holiday.

This is something that the training school should have made very clear as far as how much theory time and practical time has to be spent in order for one to qualify for the exam. However, if you have neglected to pay attention or to read the rules and regulations that the school has outlined then the problem could be your lack of understanding.

One thing that you want to be very clear on is that there is going to be certain segments to your training. Part of that will be your pre-solo and during that particular time you will have one of the school instructors with you. Once you have gotten past a certain point you are able to move on where you will start looking at your solo flying, which means being without an instructor.
